Job Summary

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME), University of Michigan (U-M), Ann Arbor, seeks outstanding scholars to apply for one senior tenure track position (associate or full professor). This position is part of a larger cluster hire that includes the Mechanical Engineering Department, the Computer Science and Engineering Department, and the Ross School of Business; the goal of the cluster is to position Michigan as a national leader in cognitive manufacturing, which is the intersection of next generation artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, and supply chain resilience.

Responsibilities*

We expect the faculty member to work closely with faculty in other units to advance next-generation resilient manufacturing systems, including resilient supply chains. All who have strong backgrounds in disciplines relevant to mechanical engineering and the manufacturing sciences are welcome to apply. We are especially interested in individuals who are committed to developing collaborative research programs and engaging in undergraduate and graduate teaching as well as eliminating systemic racism and sexism in STEM fields. 

Required Qualifications*

Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a related field.  We seek strong scholars who will provide inspiration, leadership, and impact in research, teaching, and service and contribute to the goals of the University and Department. 

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

The U-M Mechanical Engineering Department is the home of 60 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 15 research faculty, over 700 graduate students (around 280 Ph.D. students) and 700 undergraduate students. The U-M ME Department is well known for its strengths in major mechanical engineering core disciplines as well as in interdisciplinary and emerging thematic areas. The Department is consistently ranked among the top nationwide and worldwide by various ranking systems, such as the QS World rankings, the US News and World Report, and the National Research Council Ph.D. Program evaluation.
